My Story & My Beliefs

I have come to believe that our bodies were designed to heal themselves. In my world this is tantamount to professional suicide. Western Medicine treats diseases as something to be controlled at best with surgical/chemical removal of the offending organ or prescribed medications, and lifestyle changes. I believe differently.

There is no question that drugs work quickly to relieve symptoms. That is the comfort factor. If the body were to add supplements and additional therapies to build up the cells, ideally at the same time as a healthier lifestyle, the body would be able to heal itself over time. This is best accompanied by a short cleansing program such as diet limitations, fasting, homeopathic or herbal cleanses at least once upon initiation of a healthier lifestyle.

It goes like this: Our cells are the building blocks of our body. Whatever we put into it will be used to maintain or repair our cells. If it is not the ideal substance the body will use it anyway. Say our bodies are a brick house. It was built long ago with mostly excellent quality bricks. Over time, it withstands rains, hurricanes, hot and cold spells. After these events we notice the bricks have crumbled and have fallen off of the house. (This would be a symptom) We have to replace those bricks because the house will be exposed to the elements if we don’t. The only bricks available are low quality but what can we do? We USE them. It’ll hold for a while. That is, until the next storm comes and blows over a wall. The already weakened house cannot withstand the assault. In our bodies this would be an illness. If your immune system is built with mostly faulty bricks and your co-worker comes to work with a cold or the flu you get it. This could also manifest as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, fibromyalgia to name a few.

Another building analogy would be the interior façade of your home. It is beautifully stained, shiny, mahogany veneer over pressboard. The kids are playing ball in the house and knock over a lamp which nicks my beautiful wall. They don’t tell Mom but continue playing, this time with water pistols. One squirts the other but misses. The water hits just the right spot on the wall and my beautiful wall swells up like a watermelon! I know I have to cut out the swollen part. Do I replace it with real wood or another piece of veneer over pressboard?

This is the dilemma our bodies face in our current environment. We are giving it transfats instead of olive oil and healthy oils, high fructose corn syrup instead of cane sugar, preservatives, food dyes, flavor enhancers and the like. These are our bricks. The rebuilding is weak, but, unlike a house, we feel the symptoms. We FEEL the headache of high blood pressure, the pain of fibromyalgia, the fatigue of MS and so on. Our doctors give us medication for relief. Of course! Who wants to walk around like the living dead or a walking time bomb!

So what do we do? We want to rebuild our cells, our house. In my opinion, depending on the severity of the condition and other personal circumstances, we can alleviate the symptoms with medication or other medical intervention, which may require a trip to the doctor. Even though Natural medicine has many methods of assessment, physicians have tools at their disposal that natural medicine does not, including blood and imaging tests, medications and diagnostic technology. It all depends on your level of symptoms, pain tolerance, financial/insurance status and comfort level with either method of treatment. Remember this: chronic pain, fear, anxiety, insult (like hypertension) will impede our bodies’ ability to heal no matter what you do, especially if you cannot sleep well.

Then, let’s feed our body nutrients in the form of vitamins and supplements (preferably whole food) and good food. The way supplements and nutrients work is, after they go in your mouth or on your skin or any other way you choose to take them, they are absorbed into your bloodstream and delivered to the cells. Your cells are now starting to dance and sing “Yay! We finally have what we need!” They rush to take up the nutrients because they were starving. It would be like taking a high school football team, after a big game, to an endless buffet. The first few months our cells use the nutrients immediately. Then they find out they have a little extra and the body begins to store them for future needs.

This is when the person will not notice that he is feeling better. We notice the presence of symptoms, not the absence of symptoms. I suggest, when embarking on this journey, write on the calendar in 3 months and 6 months time “Do I still have (a headache, tingling, nausea, etc). This will allow you to gauge how the regimen is working.

After a while the dosage of both supplements and medication can be adjusted according to response. Back to the brick house; we have replaced or repaired the missing or crumbled bricks and there have been no further storms or the storms that came did not impact the house.

This is a healing point. Some symptoms may still be present but diminished. At this point we can just continue our journey to health and concentrate on enjoying the things we love- our families, friends, hobbies, etc.
